STORM SHIELD See-Thru Hurricane Barriers for Windows and Doors
STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers are the original "see thru" hurricane shutter system, designed to provide sun control, security, and severe weather protection. Each barrier is custom made to fit its window or door, and STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers can be installed on any type of structure, new or old. Whether on a house, office building, school, residence hall, government building, church, hospital, or emergency shelter, STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers are built to look good and perform great year after year.
Tested and certified per the Miami-Dade Building Code and ASTM E1996 Missile Level "E", STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers are approved and recognized by the State of Florida, the Miami-Dade Historical Society, the Texas Department of Insurance, and FEMA. Exeter Architectural Products is staffed with a network of representatives and an engineering staff dedicated to providing technical support to the customer. Exeter is an approved sole source supplier and is also listed on the Federal GSA Register.
Severe Weather Protection You Can See Thru
Most hurricane shutters protect a building by closing it in. Plywood, solid steel panels and roll-down shutters stop wind-borne debris, but they also block daylight, views and ventilation, and they usually have to be put up in the hours before a storm arrives. STORM SHIELD takes a different approach. Each barrier uses a heavy-duty perforated metal infill with the InvisiPerf™ pattern, set in a welded extruded aluminum frame. The perforated panel stops flying debris while people inside can still see out, natural light still reaches the room, and air can still move through the opening.
Because the barrier is designed to look like a screen rather than a storm panel, many owners leave it in place all year. That turns a hurricane shutter into an everyday building product that also adds security and reduces solar heat gain. Hurricane Barrier Styles
STORM SHIELD Hurricane Barriers are engineered, manufactured, and installed in accordance with Miami-Dade County NOA, the Florida Building Code, and other governing body requirements. Choose the barrier style that fits the way each opening is used:

Ready Mount
A "put up, take down" barrier that slides into pre-mounted head and sill tracks and is secured with stainless steel pins.

Fixed Mount
Permanently installed over the opening and in place 24 hours a day, with no storm preparation required.

Bahama Mount
A Bahama-style shutter with a high ratio of light transmittance that retracts and locks with four push pins.

Side Hinge
Swings open on two side hinges for cleaning and maintenance access, and can be fitted with a lock.

Side Hinge with Security Egress
Adds a single-point panic release latch so the barrier can be opened from inside in a fire or life safety emergency.

Top Hinge
Opens upward on two stainless steel top hinges and is secured with stainless steel securing pins.

Built for Critical Facilities and Everyday Use
Exeter Architectural Products began with CRIME SHIELD security barriers and developed STORM SHIELD after Hurricane Andrew showed the need for stronger protection against category 4 and 5 storms. The barriers are specified for emergency operations centers, government buildings, hospitals and other medical facilities, schools, colleges and universities, condominiums and housing complexes, and private homes. Typical benefits include:
- Impact protection: perforated 14 gauge steel or 300 series stainless steel infill designed for ASTM E1886/E1996 Level "E" essential facilities protection.
- Always ready: fixed and hinged styles stay in place year round, so there is little or no preparation when a storm is forecast.
- Security: the same barrier deters break-ins and vandalism, and the optional security egress latch lets occupants exit quickly in an emergency.
- Sun control: independent testing measured a shading coefficient of .51, meaning solar heat gain through a protected opening is reduced by almost 50%. See the sun control study.
- Appearance: narrow, equal sight lines and standard bronze or white finishes, with custom colors available.
